Chair of the ACS Ministerial Council Highlights Ocean Priorities at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference

Nice, France, July 10, 2025 – During the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martínez-Acha, who currently serves as President of the Ministerial Council of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), highlighted the Association’s priorities regarding the Caribbean Sea and Ocean Governance. He reaffirmed the Greater Caribbean’s commitment to the protection and sustainable management of its marine resources.
In his address, Minister Martínez-Acha emphasized the importance of preserving and integrating the management of the Caribbean Sea, recognized as a common heritage of great ecological and socio-cultural value for all ACS Member States. He also stressed the need to strengthen ocean governance, promote action against threats such as sargassum, and enhance multilateral cooperation in ocean protection.
He further underlined that international cooperation and multilateralism are key instruments in addressing global challenges, including climate change, which threatens the health of marine ecosystems and the well-being of coastal communities.
The ACS continues its efforts to position the Greater Caribbean as a model for sustainable ocean management, promoting initiatives that foster the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems and strengthening cooperation among its Member States and international partners.
