Greater Caribbean Agrees on a Common Position to Strengthen the Regional Response to Sargassum
Caracas, Venezuela. September 2026 — The members of the Sargassum Subcommission of the Caribbean Sea Commission of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) agreed on a Common Position on Sargassum in the Greater Caribbean, consolidating a regional voice to address, in a coordinated manner, one of the most significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing the region.
The agreement is the result of a consultation process led by the ACS through its Sargassum Subcommission, comprising experts from Cuba, Guatemala, Aruba, Belize, Guyana, Suriname, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago. This platform made it possible to connect national experiences, scientific knowledge and shared priorities and bring them forward to the 4th EU–Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum in Cancún.
The Common Position sets out concrete priorities to advance towards a science-based regional response; strengthen monitoring, data sharing and early warning; expand sustainable solutions and value chains; and mobilise cooperation, technology, investment and financing to scale up initiatives.
