RESOLUTION OF MOURNING

NR/009/2014

THE MEMBER STATES OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CARIBBEAN STATES, AS WELL AS THE STAFF OF THE SECRETARIAT, PAST AND PRESENT:

CONSIDERING:

The untimely passing of Professor Norman Girvan on Wednesday 9th April, 2014;

That his passing represents an irreparable and painful loss for his family as well as his numerous friends and colleagues in the professional, academic and diplomatic spheres;

That Prof. Girvan was the Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, ACS, elected by acclamation at the 5th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council in December 1999 in Panama City, Panama;

That he was an outstanding leader whose dedication to duty, warmth and sense of humor won him the respect and friendship of those who knew him;

That Prof. Girvan’s academic and professional career, much of which was devoted to the cause of integrating the Greater Caribbean, serves as a sterling example of commitment to a noble vision;

That he significantly advanced the work of the Association, tirelessly promoting the ACS as a Cooperation Zone, and reinforcing in no small measure, the foundations for, as can be recognized today, in its 20th year, a relevant forum for dialogue and concerted action in areas of vital interest to the Greater Caribbean;

 

Express their:

Profound appreciation for the contribution of Professor Norman Girvan to the consolidation and advancement of the Association of Caribbean States;

Their deep regret at this great loss, and sincere wishes that Professor Girvan may rest in peace;

Extend their condolences to, and solidarity with, his family and friends; and

Commit themselves to strengthen with renewed vigor, his legacy at the Association of Caribbean States.
