The Special Committee on Natural Disasters focuses mainly on fostering cooperation between the bodies responsible for disaster planning and response in the region.

The Committee has four main objectives for the next two years. One of these is to help in institutional strengthening of regional bodies. This includes human resource and project management.

Another main objectives is to achieve ratification of the agreement for response to natural disasters, which was signed during the 2nd Summit of Heads of States and/or Governments of the ACS in 1999.

The Committee is also providing tools to strengthen national organisations in prevention and mitigation of natural disasters.

The Special Committee on Natural Disasters meets twice yearly, with two additional annual meetings of the Technical Working Group.
