The Republic of Panama is situated at the southern end of the isthmus joining the Americas. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east, with the Caribbean to the north and the Pacific to the south. The capital is Panama city. Bananas account for nearly a third of export earnings and the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors employs approximately one-fifth of the workforce and contributes 8 per cent of GDP. Industry accounts for around 18 per cent of both employment and GDP. Panama is an important offshore financial centre and the services sector employs 62 per cent of the workforce and contributes 74 per cent of GDP.
