Area: 48,308 square kilometres The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Capital is Santo Domingo and ferronickel and sugar are important exports. The agriculture, forestry and fishing sector accounts for about 13 per cent of both employment and GDP. Industry employs approximately 23 per cent of the workforce and contributes 32 per cent of GDP, while the services sector employs 64 percent of the workforce and contributes 55 percent of GDP.
