The republic of Colombia lies in the northwest of South America with both Caribbean and Pacific coasts and also possesses a number of islands including San Andrés in the Caribbean, which is a popular tourist destination. The capital is Santafé de Bogotá. The country’s main exports are coffee and oil, with bananas, cut flowers, sugar and coal also important. The agriculture forestry and fishing sectors employs around 25 per cent of the working population and contributes 15 per cent of GDP. Industry (including mining) also employs approximately 25 per cent of the workforce and contributes 35 per cent of GDP, while the services sector accounts for half of both employment and GDP.
