Aruba signed the convention establishing the ACS in December 1998, to be admitted as an Associate Member. It lies 25 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela and 68 kilometers to the west of Curaçao. The capital is Oranjestad. Originally part of the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba achieved separate status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986. There is some cultivation of aloes and a small petrochemicals industry based around St Nicholas oil refinery, but financial services and tourism are the major economic activities.
