Port of Spain (April 1, 2009) –  The Secretariat of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) received a courtesy visit on 31 March 2009 from Ambassador Yongkyu Kwon, newly appointed Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Trinidad & Tobago, who has a long career in the Korean diplomatic service.

During the visit, the ACS Secretary General, Ambassador Luis Fernando Andrade Falla, accompanied by the Political Advisor, Dr Watson Denis met Ambassador Kwon to discuss ongoing collaboration between the ACS and the Republic of Korea. In the discussions, particular emphasis was placed on international cooperation, Caribbean Sea Commission’s activities and Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Republic of Korea’s partnership with the ACS goes back to 2003 when the country was admitted as an Observer in the ACS and Korea has, in fact, already contributed to several projects in the ACS key focal areas.

In September 2008, Secretary General Andrade traveled to the Republic of Korea to attend the closing ceremony of the training course in port management for ACS countries, and to participate in the Korea-Latin America Economic Cooperation and Business Forum.

Following this important meeting, the ACS Secretariat is confident that ACS-Korea relations will be reinforced for the benefit of the countries and people of the Greater Caribbean.
