ACS Secretary General visits Guadeloupe

Port of Spain (May 2, 2008) – The Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) made his first official mission to Guadeloupe, since assuming office in March 2008.

The highlight of the mission was the Secretary General’s meeting on 17 April with the President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe, Mr. Victorin Lurel. The objective of the meeting was to foster an exchange of ideas, and to discuss opportunities for further collaboration between the ACS and the Region of Guadeloupe.

President Lurel took the opportunity to articulate Guadeloupe’s perspectives as Chairman of the ACS Special Committee for Trade and External Relations. Within this theme, the ongoing negotiations between the European Union (EU) and CARIFORUM for the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) were discussed.

Discussions also centred on the importance of strengthening communication links, and air & maritime routes as a means to further integrate the sub-regions of the Greater Caribbean, and in particular the French regions.

The meeting also focused on developments in Sustainable Tourism and the promotion of French and foreign languages through the ACS project for the Center for the Promotion of the Languages & Culture of the Greater Caribbean.

At that meeting the Secretary General was accompanied by Ms Murielle Lesalles, ACS Project Advisor, who also participated at the Meeting of the Monitoring Committee for the European INTERREG Programme (17-18 April), and the Regional Conference on Cooperation (21-22 April).

The Republic of France is an Associate Member of the ACS in respect of its overseas departments of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Martinique. This year Guadeloupe took over the Presidency of the ACS Special Committee for Trade and External Relations.
