ACS: Guest of Honour at XI International Book Fair
of Santo Domingo

 


Port of Spain (May 2, 2008) – The Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Ambassador Luis Fernando Andrade Falla recently travelled to the Dominican Republic for the inauguration of the IX International Book Fair of Santo Domingo, where the ACS is the Guest of Honour.

This dedication is the first of its kind in the history of the Book Fair, since traditionally, a single nation is chosen to be honoured. This year however, a special tribute was paid to each of the twenty-eight Member States and Associate Members of the ACS.

The Book Fair was officially inaugurated on 21 April 2008 at the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte at a grand ceremony attended by President of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency Dr. Leonel Fernández Reyna, former ACS Secretary General, Dr Rubén Silié, Secretary of Culture of the Dominican Republic, Lic. José Rafael Lantigua, Mr Alejandro Arvelo, Director of the Fair and other specially invited guests.

Ambassador Andrade also formally opened the ACS Pavilion on 22 April 2008.  The ACS Pavilion of Honour provides an opportunity to promote the concept of the Greater Caribbean and to offer a global vision of the region, while promoting the culture of each ACS Member and Associate Member State.

The International Book Fair assembles hundreds of exhibitors, artists and visitors from different parts of the world all of whom contribute to and partake in the various literary, intellectual, artistic and culinary activities spanning two weeks in that nation’s capital of Santo Domingo.  The Book Fair has been extended to Friday 9 May.
