The authentic wealth of the Greater Caribbean remains in its cultural and environmental diversity. Tourism, the largest and fastest growing industry in the world, is steadily growing in the Greater Caribbean, bringing approximately over 33 billion US dollars and providing over 3.2 million jobs. This is particularly important for a region that has been recognised as the world’s most tourism dependant. The decision is in our hands to take advantage of the tourism industry’s ability to enrich not only our economies but also the quality of life of our people. The adequate use of our socio-cultural and environmental wealth and its transformation into economic wealth and citizens’ welfare represent a real regional challenge that could only be conquered with the contribution of all tourism stakeholders. As the regional forum for consultation, co-operation and concerted action among the countries of the Greater Caribbean, the Association of Caribbean States works steadily to promote the sustainable development of the region. The Convention Establishing the Sustainable Tourism Zone of the Caribbean (STZC), signed by our Heads of State and/or Government in 2001, represents the political will of our leaders. It is now our responsibility, as Member States and Associate Members to make it work in our favour, to make sure that “Tourism Enriches” in the Greater Caribbean. Happy World Tourism Day!
