Secretariats of the region meet in Caracas

Port of Spain (July 18, 2006) – The 6th Meeting on Inter-Secretariat Co-operation in the Greater Caribbean was held last Thursday 13 July, 2006, at the headquarters of the Latin American Economic System (SELA) in Caracas, Venezuela. In his opening remarks to the meeting, comprised of representatives from CARICOM, ECLAC and SELA, SELA’s Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Roberto Guarnieri, stressed the need to strengthen the regional cooperation and integration organisations, and pledged to intensify his organisation’s cooperation activities within the Greater Caribbean

ACS Secretary General, Rubén Silié, in addressing the gathering, underlined that there is a single agenda for the Greater Caribbean, that could be prioritized differently for each organisation, but which calls for the same resources. Said SG Silié, “…todavía tenemos que seguir creando conciencia para convencernos de que estos objetivos sólo se cumplirán actuando de forma coordinada y al unísono, para lo cual es imprescindible trabajar en clave de unidad.”

The Inter-Secretariat meeting sought to examine ways in which the Secretariats of the Greater Caribbean region could work together to achieve their common goals. It also provided a space in which each participating entity could air their opinions and concerns in this respect.

During the ensuing political dialogue, CARICOM’s Assistant Secretary General, Foreign and Community Relations, Ambassador Colin Granderson made reference to the implementation of the CSME and placed great importance on reinforcing links between the public and private sector. The ECLAC representative reiterated the United Nation’s commitment to supporting the process of integration and regional cooperation and informed of the activities already being carried out by their Caribbean Development Cooperation Committee (UNECLAC/CDCC). SELA’s SG highlighted the subject of asymmetries, the institutionalization of integration as well as the modernization of the Secretariats and governance.

The ACS Secretariat was given the lead role in advancing the creation of Greater Caribbean information portal, with support from the UNECLAC/CDCC Information Centre in order to better coordinate this activity. The next Meeting on Inter-Secretariat Co-operation will take place within a year at the ACS Secretariat.
