ACS Membership increases



PORT OF SPAIN, (April 7, 2006) - The Turks and Caicos Islands were officially accepted as Associate Members of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) by the 11 thMeeting of the Ministerial Council of the ACS on March 28, 2006 .

As Associate Members of this organisation, the Turks and Caicos Islands “ shall have the right to intervene in discussions and vote at meetings of the Ministerial Council and Special Committees on matters which affect them directly, falling within their constitutional competence.”

 


Additionally, it is expected that the Ministerial Council will successfully negotiate relationship agreements with this Territory, which will determine the manner in which the Turks and Caicos Islands may “participate in, and vote at meetings of the Ministerial Council and Special Committees.”

The agreement admitting the Turks and Caicos as Associate Members in the ACS was signed by the Chairman of the Ministerial Council, His Excellency, Jorge Chen, Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Mexican States on behalf of the ACS.

The Turks and Caicos Islands were represented by the Honourable Jeffrey C. Hall, Minister of Communication, Works and Utilities, who communicated his Government’s assurance that they would “participate fully and support the work of the Association, within the context of its membership and constitutional competence, in meeting the objectives of the Association.”
