Guatemala holds ACS chairmanship for 2006

PORT OF SPAIN, (April 5, 2006) – The culmination of the 11 th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), marked the end of Mexico’s chairmanship of the organisation and the beginning of Guatemala’s role as Chairman of the Ministerial Council for 2006.

The Executive Board of the Ministerial Council for 2006 is also comprised of Cuba and Suriname as Vice Chairmen and Colombia as Rapporteur.

 


This is Guatemala’s second time in the Chair, having previously occupied the post in 1998 and served in the positions of Vice Chairman and Rapporteur at various times throughout the ACS’ eleven year existence.

Historically, this country has taken a very active role in the activities of Special Committees as well, and was a member of the Executive Board of the Special Fund for five consecutive years. Guatemala has also taken a great interest in the area of Natural Disasters and held a seat on that Committee’s Executive Board in 2004 and 2005.

Guatemala ’s delegation to the 11 th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council was headed by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Héctor Iván Espinoza Farfán. That country’s term as Chairman began at the end of that Ministerial Council Meeting and will run until the close of the 12 th meeting of the Council.
