ACS Ministerial Council supports Haiti’s re-emergence on the international landscape

PORT OF SPAIN, (March 31, 2006) – The Haitian delegation to the 11 th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), lead by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hérard Abraham, arrived full of expectancy for the day’s negotiations and left, not only with posts on the Executive Boards of four of the six ACS Committees, but more importantly with the solidarity expressed by their fellow Member States and Associate Members of the ACS.

The meeting welcomed the presentation made by Minister Abraham on the electoral process of the recently concluded presidential elections in his country and issued a Ministerial Declaration on Haiti, calling on the international community to assist in Haiti’s political, economic and social reconstruction.

Haiti demonstrated its renewed commitment to the work of the Association by presenting candidatures for posts on the Executive Boards of various Committees and was confirmed in the post of Vice Chairman of the Special Committees on Natural Disasters, Transport and the Council of National Representatives of the Special Fund. The country will also serve as Rapporteur of the Special Committee on Sustainable Tourism.

At the culmination of the day’s deliberations, Minister Abraham presented the Secretary General with a framed piece of artwork commissioned especially for the ACS Secretariat, by one of Haiti’s renowned artists Richard Barbot, on behalf of the Government and people of Haiti, and in recognition of the ACS’ unstinting support for the country.
