Trinidad and Tobago relinquishes Chair of ACS Trade Committee

PORT OF SPAIN, ( (March 29, 2006) – After serving for two years as Chairman of the ACS Special Committee on Trade Development and External Economic Relations, Trinidad and Tobago ceded the post to the Republic of Panama yesterday, March 28, at the 11th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council.

In presenting the final report of Trinidad and Tobago’s tenure to the Preparatory Meeting, Ms. Sandra Honoré, Director, CARICOM and Caribbean Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke on behalf of the Minister Trade and Industry, the Honourable Kenneth Valley, expressing the Minister’s satisfaction with the work of the ACS in that area of trade, stating that “the ACS provides the ideal opportunity for us to realise a large part of our trade and integration agenda. For Trinidad and Tobago, the ACS is part of our developmental paradigm, which is defined by our goal of becoming a hub for investment, finance, manufacturing and transhipment.”

 


The Trade Committee is responsible for promoting the creation of an enhanced economic space for trade and investment in the region and in support of this mandate, the Committee organised the 1 st Meeting on the Facilitation of Customs Procedures in the Greater Caribbean in conjunction with the Ministry of Trade of Trinidad and Tobago. It also conducted a seminar, in collaboration with the Mexican Government, on Negotiating Investment Agreements within the ACS Region and also dealt with the issue of Small Economies and Special and Differential Treatment within the context of its 5 th Brainstorming Session on the aforementioned matter.

The Special Committee on Trade’s Executive Board for the year 2006 is comprised of Panama as Chairman, El Salvador and Mexico as Vice Chairmen and Trinidad and Tobago as Rapporteur.

The Executive Boards of the ACS Special Committees are elected for a term of one year, with the possibility of re-election for a second consecutive year. The list of members of the Executive Board elected to serve for 2006 is availble below:
