Silié applauds Haitian electoral turnout

PORT OF SPAIN (February 10, 2006) – ACS Secretary General Rubén Silié commended the successfully concluded elections in Haiti, reiterating the ACS’ support for that Member State’s efforts at re-establishing political order.

In a letter addressed to interim Prime Minister Gérard Latortue, Silié expressed his satisfaction that not only did the Haitian population have the opportunity to vote on that historic day of February 7, but that they embraced their civic duty and showed up in their numbers to do so, thus demonstrating their resolve to reinforce their democracy.

Speaking on behalf of the ACS membership, Silié declared “We are happy to transmit our congratulations to the Haitian people, the competent authorities and the international organisations, all of whom contributed to the achievement of this exemplary political action.”

Gérard Latortue had met with the Rubén Silié at the ACS Secretariat last month while on a visit to Trinidad and Tobago, and the two leaders exchanged promises of mutual support; Latortue reaffirming Haiti’s commitment to the ACS and Silié expressing the ACS Member countries’ solidarity with the people of Haiti.
