PORT OF SPAIN (September 9, 2005) – Mrs. Colette Erivan and Mr. Claude Fabignon of the Pointe-a-Pitre Chamber of Commerce spent a full day in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on September 7, 2005, promoting the upcoming ACS Business Forum of the Greater Caribbean, which will take place in Guadeloupe from October 4-6, 2005.

The whirlwind visit culminated in a meeting at the ACS Secretariat with various members of the local business community, among them, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturer’s Association, Mr. Paul Quesnel; Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce, Ms. Carol Ayoung; and

representatives from the food, chemical, plastics and financial services sectors.

ACS Secretary General, Rubén Silié, reminded the gathering that, “Commercial activity has always played a part in nations’ history…we in the Association of Caribbean States understand that the development of commercial activity is essential to achieving the objective of uniting the Caribbean.”

The representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Pointe-à-Pitre, highlighted the advantages of investing in and trading with Guadeloupe and the French islands, attempting to allay some businessmen’s concerns about EU import/export customs regulations .

Goods coming from the ACP countries will attract the same taxes as goods being imported from France or the European Union, confirmed Mr. Fabignon, and those taxes were unlikely to exceed 30% of the value of the goods. He also pointed out that there were already some Trinidadian companies exporting to the French West Indies, providing them with goods such as steel and agro-industrial products.

The participants in the interactive session were also given a demonstration of the Forum’s website, where companies could set up their own business meetings with partners of their choice. The businesses were grouped into 6 sub categories: Industrial and Commercial Goods; Services; Imports; Organisations and Institutions; Investments and Exports.

Registration for the 6 th Business Forum of the Greater Caribbean is free, and m ore information can be obtained from the Forum website at : http://www.6emeforum-aec-guadeloupe.com/index.php?ci=4
