the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the ACS, to be “emblematic of the good things that we can achieve in our region by harnessing the synergies of different organisations toward the common good”.

As explained by Ms. Julia Brothwell, Co-ordinator of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Port of Spain, “One of the challenges in disaster management has always been to raise the awareness of risk of the public sufficiently to cause a reaction…” and this audio soap opera aims to do exactly that - raise awareness and change the behaviour of the public regarding disaster and risk reduction, hopefully reducing the impact of disasters through saving lives, and the protection of human health, resources and assets.

Each of the ten episodes of the audio soap opera focuses on flooding and related issues of hurricanes, storms, landslides and food security, while touching on a series of sub-topics such as risk reduction, preservation of public health, early warning systems, climate change, building codes, and community empowerment, among others.

“The Rough Season” was previously presented to and well received by the Heads of State and/or Government of the ACS at the 4 th ACS Summit in Panama in July 2005.
