ACS AND CEPREDENAC UNITE TO REDUCE REGION’S VULNERABILITY TO DISASTERS

PANAMA CITY (July 28, 2005) – Dr. Rubén Silié, Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and Mr. Gerónimo J. Giusto, Executive Secretary of the Coordination Centre for Natural Disasters Prevention in Central America (CEPREDENAC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding this afternoon, July 28, 2005, at the Caesar Park Hotel, in Panama City, within the framework of the 4 th Extraordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the ACS.

This MOU sets forth the basic principles and guidelines under which the two institutions will work together to develop activities related to research, consultation, the implementation of projects and programmes, the exchange of experts and the organisation of seminars.

CEPREDENAC is a coordination centre that works towards strengthening Central America’s capacity to reduce its vulnerability to the effects of natural disasters, a mission that falls in line with that of the ACS Special Committee on Natural Disasters, which is to facilitate tools to strengthen national organisations in the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters.
