| NR/ xxx/2005 ACS NEWS RELEASE DISASTER MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP CALMS “THE ROUGH SEASON” PANAMA CITY (July 28, 2005) – The Secretariat of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) presented two of the fruits of its labour to the Ministers of its membership, assembled today, July 28, 2005, at the Caesar Park Hotel in Panama City, Panama, in the form of an interactive CD Rom highlighting the successful experiences and all presentations made at the recently concluded Disaster Management workshop in Havana, Cuba and a CD containing ten episodes of an audio soap opera entitled “The Rough Season”. The CD Rom, “Workshop on Experiences in Disaster Management” is a collection of experiences on successful Disaster Management practices with special emphasis on areas including Early Warning Systems, Resource Management, Prevention and Mitigation Programmes, Institutional Strengthening and Budget Administration. “The Rough Season” focuses on disaster risk reduction in the English speaking Caribbean and focuses on hazards like hurricanes, floods, landslides and food security crises. The audio soap opera, “The Rough Season” was a collaborative effort of the Association of Caribbean States, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). . The “Workshop on Experiences in Disaster Management” and the CD Rom produced by the ACS were sponsored by the British High Commission of Port of Spain and the Republic of Turkey.
