ACS NEWS RELEASE

ACS Summit to be Re-Scheduled

PORT OF SPAIN (17.02.04) - The 4th Summit of Heads of State and/or Government of the Association of Caribbean States, scheduled to have taken place 13th - 14th February in Panama, was postponed following a decision by the government of Panama, in view of the relatively small number of confirmations of attendance by the Heads of State and/or Government.

The future date for the Summit was therefore one of the topics of discussion by the Third Extraordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the ACS which proceeded as planned in Panama City on 12th February.

In his opening address, His Excellency Harmodio Arias Cerjack, Minister of Foreign Relations of Panama reiterated his government's willingness and commitment to host the Summit in Panama City. Delegates acknowledged the outstanding work of the Panama government in their preparations for the Summit.

Discussions on this Agenda item focused on establishing mechanisms for ensuring a mutually agreeable date for the Summit that would ensure the widest possible participation at the highest level, as the ACS approaches its 10th anniversary in July 2004.

In this regard, it was agreed that the Chairman of the Ministerial Council, the Honourable Delano Franklyn, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Jamaica), would make the necessary consultations with Member States and Associate Members for the re-scheduling of the Summit.
