"The project will produce an updated and comprehensive set of regional codes and standards for wind and earthquake loads, and the means to expand their use by member countries of the Association of Caribbean States, thereby resulting in safe and economical design of buildings in these countries," ACS Transport and Natural Disasters Director Carlos Dávila says. "This project will provide very valuable information to ensure substantial reduction in human and property losses from natural hazards in the Greater Caribbean." The updated set will include both small and large buildings such as single and two storey dwelling houses and office buildings, hotels and guest houses, large assembly buildings such as schools, and essential buildings such as hospitals. The updated codes will be distributed over the Internet and on CD-ROM. The Inter-American Development Bank is the funding Agency of the project and the ACS Secretariat will supervise and monitor the execution of the work of four regional consultants from Costa Rica and Trinidad and of two specialists from an Italian specialised institution (Politecnico di Milano). In keeping with the spirit of regional cooperation, the ACS and the consultants will collaborate with various national, regional and international institutions and organizations that are actually involved in the area of building codes. Such institutions/organisations include but are not limited to, the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS), Council of Caribbean Engineering Organizations (CCEO), Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Organisation of American States (OAS), University of the West Indies (UWI), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia, Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), and Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR). |
